TRAVEL TIPS
How to check a hotel or airbnb for hidden cameras
You always want to do what you can to ensure your privacy and security while traveling. This includes your rental accommodations, whether it’s a hotel room or an Airbnb.
Checking rental accommodations for hidden cameras
You always want to do what you can to ensure your privacy and security while traveling. This includes your rental accommodations, whether it’s a hotel room or an Airbnb. Although hidden cameras are rare in a rental property, it’s a good idea to check for them.
Travel with a small flashlight for multiple uses. In this case, a flashlight is helpful because hidden cameras often have reflective surfaces that can be detected when light is shined on them.
Check accommodations
- Common locations – smoke detectors, alarm clocks, electrical outlets, decorations on the wall, picture frames, decorative items, such as flower vases
- Wires and cables that seem out of place – cameras may be connected to power sources or transmitting devices
- Mirrors and glasses – cameras may be hidden behind one-way mirrors; look for irregularities or signs of tampering
Other things to do
- Turn off WiFi and bluetooth – some hidden cameras may connect to the network for remote access
- Trust reviews and recommendations – always check out recommendations on reputable travel web sites; you may find mention of suspicious or uncomfortable experiences
If you suspect hidden cameras, immediately contact the manager of the lodging. They should take your concerns seriously. If you have strong suspicions and are concerned for your safety, ask to change rooms or find another place to stay.
Remember, although it’s important to take precautions, most rental accommodations prioritize guest privacy and security. Your own check of your accommodations should give you peace of mind.
