How do I budget for travel

Travel, Languages & Communication!

Maybe you’re not a linguist, but you don’t have to be in order to communicate in a language other than English. Although much of the world speaks English, there are many benefits to learning some common phrases and words in the language of your destination.

Needless to say, you’ll be able to communicate more easily with locals if you can speak the local language. Many people appreciate your effort and will be more open to you. You’ll help bridge cultures by speaking the local language. Not only does the use of the language show respect for the culture and people, it can make it easier for you to gain insights into local customs, traditions, and ways of thinking.

Speaking even a little of the local language can enhance your travel experience by opening up possibilities and experiences you might miss out on if you speak only English. It can also be helpful in an emergency. Should you need assistance of any kind, you’ll want to be able to indicate so clearly. Knowing the simple word “help” in the local language could save your life.

Think of all the things you do when you travel – order food, make purchases, ask for directions, use transportation. It will be much more convenient for you and anyone you’re communicating with if you know some key words and phrases. As a bonus, negotiating when buying from vendors at a market could save you money when you speak their language.

Finally, learning a new language is a great opportunity for personal growth. Doing so will both challenge your brain and enhance your travel experience.

You don’t have to become fluent in a language to communicate more easily in a non-English speaking country. Knowing some basic words and phrases can help.

If you set up your international trip in the TripSava app, we will generate the top phases for you to use when you are traveling. This includes the phonetic pronunciation of these words to help!

If you’d like a more comprehensive way to communicate  – other than fully learning a language – consider using Google Translate which will let you use your phone to translate from a foreign language to English or English to a foreign language. It will show you how to say the word and you can have your phone play it for you so you can hear how to pronounce it too!
