How do I budget for travel

Radio-Frequency Identification (RFID) Protection

Many bank cards and documents (including passports) have RFID chips. This technology uses radio waves to transmit data wirelessly. RFID allows cardholders to tap their cards on contactless terminals to complete transactions. They also store valuable personal and financial information.

Although convenient for users, RFID needs to be protected from unauthorized scanning to avoid security and privacy risks. Consider using a RFID-blocking device to protect your data. Here are some common devices.

Wallets, card holders, passport covers: These RFID-blocking holders are equipped with materials that block or shield RFID signals. Placing your RFID-enabled items in one of them will prevent unauthorized scanning and skimming of your personal and financial information.

Sleeves: RFID-blocking sleeves are thin, protective envelopes designed to hold individual credit cards, ID cards, or passports. They are a cost-effective way to protect specific cards or documents.

Bags, purses, backpacks: Some bags, purses, and backpacks include RFID-blocking lining or compartments to protect the contents from electronic theft.

Fabric and materials: Some clothing and accessories are made with RFID-blocking fabric or materials that can help protect your information when you carry your RFID-enabled  items in them.

Card protectors: These small, flat devices can hold multiple credit cards or ID cards. They fold to a small size and are easily carried in a pocket while protecting your information.

Smartphone case: Some cases have built-in RFID-blocking technology to protect cards you store in your phone’s wallet feature.

Passport wallet: These specially designed RFID-blocking wallets have multiple compartments for your passport, boarding passes, credit cards, and other travel documents that will protect them from RFID scanning.

Although RFID skimming is considered relatively rare as compared to other forms of identity theft and not all RFID cards are vulnerable to attacks, travelers commonly use RFID protective devices to safeguard their data from potential data thieves. Using a RFID device can give you peace of mind that your personal and financial data are safe.

You’ll want to choose a device that is best suited to your needs and style of travel. Even though RFID devices offer a measure of security, continue to follow safe security practices, such as monitoring your accounts regularly for inconsistencies and reporting stolen or lost cards immediately.
